Grieving for Grandma

My grandma and I when I was about 9 years old.

In all of my 33 years on this earth, I’ve never known how it truly feels to grieve until now.  My father died in a head-on collision when I was 8 months old, but I was too young to understand.  As I got older and saw my friends with their fathers, I would cry and plead for him to my mother.  She comforted me as best she could, and those moments would pass.  But those times don’t compare to the loss of my grandmother a few months ago.

She had been in and out of the hospital for a few months.  I always expected her to come out as she had all the other times, but this time was different.  My grandma had been saying things in the months leading up to her passing that foreshadowed it.  She told me what song she wanted sung at her home going, and she kept saying that she thought she was leaving this world the last time she was in the hospital.  My words to her were, “Grandma, you’re not going anywhere until you and God are good and ready for you to go.”  What I didn’t know was that she was.

That was my prayer for her also–that she’d be ready when it was time.  I didn’t expect for it to happen for a long while though.  She was only 81 years old and was full of spunk and laughter and most importantly the Word of God.  Surely that was enough to sustain her for many more years.  Although that was what I wanted for her, that was not what she desired.

When I got the call that she had gone back to the hospital a day before she passed, I did not go visit her.  In my mind, if I had rushed up there to see her, it would seem like I was expected the worst.  So I just prayed that she would be fine as usual.  A part of me felt deep down inside that no matter how hard I prayed, if her will was not in agreement, it wouldn’t matter.

The next evening my mom got a call from my aunt saying that my grandma had coded 4 times.  The doctors revived her, but they would not do it anymore if her heart stopped again.  My mom and I took the trip to Columbia to see her, both of us in silence, whispering prayers.  I didn’t speed, even though my mom wanted me to.  As soon as we got there my cousin met us in the lobby with the news that grandma didn’t make it.  She had actually been gone when we got the call.  They just didn’t want to tell us over the phone (which I appreciated).

Man, that next hour with my family and my grandma lying in the hospital bed was rough.  Calls started coming in from friends and family, tears started pouring down my face, guilt started creeping in over all the things I didn’t do for her while she was still alive, and thoughts of a future without her started invading my mind.  I was relieved to find out that she had been making preparations all along–making peace with old foes, contacting those with whom she had lost contact, and focusing on her relationship with God instead of worrying about her children.  Yet I was angry that she decided to leave us behind.  So many emotions.  So many changes.

And 3 months later, I still feel these changes.  When I go somewhere that reminds me of her, it hurts.  When I dream of her, it hurts.  When I think about spending the upcoming holidays without her, it hurts.  I know that she is still with me and that her legacy lives on in me–her loud laugh, her love for shopping, and her thick hair are a few of the things we share.  I miss her dearly and I know that even now if she had a choice, she wouldn’t come back here, for she is rejoicing in Heaven with the angels.

Grandma, I love you and will never forget your love for me.

About Last Night

Warning:  If youImage have not seen Kevin Hart’s new movie “About Last Night”  you may not want to read this yet.

Okay, so my husband and I went to see About Last Night for Valentine’s Day.  I must admit that I was a little disappointed.  It was supposed to be a romantic comedy, right?  Kevin Hart as always delivered on the comedy, but the romance part left much to be desired.  Maybe it’s just me, but I hardly find hooking up with a guy you just met (literally hours ago) romantic, nor do I find it romantic to build a relationship and a life together around sex.  I realize that that is what the world has come to.  I realize that sex sells.  I totally get that.  But I can’t neglect to call a spade a spade.  It’s packaged as romance, but it is simply perversion and deception.

What concerns me most is that many of my brothers and sisters in Christ are being deceived into thinking that such behaviors are acceptable and even desirable to get them the love they want. What I wished the movie would have warned in the opening credits was “Please don’t try this at home.  This is only for entertainment purposes and should not be considered reality in any way, shape or form because it will not work for you!”  The lie that satan would have you to believe is that it will work, but this is NOT God’s will for his children.  The only way that you will know that though is by knowing His Word, which is His Will.  It’s like those little highlighter pens that businesses use to identify counterfeit money.  Give it a swipe and it will reveal whether that dollar is the real deal or not.  In any situation you encounter, the Word of God (if known and practiced by you) will reveal the lies and deception of satan, leaving your heart in tact.  Who wants a damaged heart anyway?

The Holy Spirit was given to us to bring all things back to our remembrance, but the funny thing about remembering is you have to have already experienced or been taught something before you can recall it.  So give Him a Word bank to draw from that will help you in those vulnerable times when you’re tempted to try the world’s way.  How does one do that?  For starters, stop spending every free moment you have filling your mind with lies (ie. watching God dishonoring shows and movies and talking to negative, faithless people) and spend more time filling it with Truth–the way, the truth, and the life Himself in the form of Jesus Christ.  I’m not suggesting that you stop watching television or cut off all your friends.  I’m simply suggesting that you increase your Word intake, which will most likely result in watching less television and less time engaging in idle conversation.  Your mate or future mate will be grateful that you are interested in building a relationship based on the right things because you have a relationship with the One who is right(eous).

As always… I’m not judgin’.  I’m just sayin’.  If you’ve seen the movie tell me your thoughts on the matter.

Girl, Take Your Power Back!

The other morning while on car duty at work, I had a very interesting conversation with a sixth grade girl.  Usually when dropped off at school this young girl would say good morning and walk right on by me with her book bag rolling behind her.  But this morning was different.  She decided she would stay outside with me while waiting on a particular friend of hers to arrive.  This friend was a sixth grade boy who she said she likes and has liked for years.  She was waiting on him so they could walk in and sit together before school began.

I was intrigued by her loyalty to this male “friend,” so I probed a little.  “Does he know you like him?” I asked.

“Yeah, he knows,” she said proudly.  “The whole school knows by now.”

“So how does he treat you since he knows?’  “Does he still hang out with you?”

“Oh he still talks to me, but he has a girlfriend,” she said as an after thought.

At that point I wanted to tell her, “Gal, get your behind in that building, and leave that boy alone!” but I contained myself and inquired a bit more.

“So how does it make you feel knowing that he has a girlfriend?” I asked.

“Umm, it’s okay,” she said shrugging her shoulders.  “I’m just waiting for them to break up.”

With that, I realized that even from a young age many girls develop unhealthy views of relationships.  Why would she think that it’s okay to throw yourself in the path of someone who doesn’t have her to think about?  Can’t she see how foolish that appears?  Obviously not because she waited and waited for her long-time crush to arrive.

Sadly, she is not the only one.  I think we have all been there a time or two, but praise be to God I received a revelation that set me free.  Ladies, calmly think about this.

Your happiness has much to do with the decisions you make regarding your relationships.  Make the choice that you will not settle for less than you deserve, which is God’s best.  I do not believe that God’s best involves you playing second fiddle to another woman or being in some man’s back pocket at his disposal.  That’s the devil!  You are worth so much more than that.  If you are the virtuous woman that the Bible speaks of, then your price is far above rubies.  Now what fool is going to carry around a jewel that precious along with his pocket lint?  Just like his jeans, he taking you through the ringer.  It may sound funny, but I’m being real.

Don’t let your desire for a man rule over you and control you.  Have the desire because it’s natural, but don’t let it have  you.  Being in that state of mind is sin.  I had to come to this realization as a single woman too.  My deliverance came from the Word of God.  In James 1:14-15 says “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”  Now a lust is simply a desire gone haywire.  So quite naturally and according to divine providence we all have the desire for loving companionship.  It goes with the territory.  But God never intended for the desire to turn to lust–a lust that will make you do just about anything to fulfill itself.  Once that lust has taken root in us, it causes us to sin.  I’m not just speaking of sexual sin, even though that definitely applies.  I’m also speaking of manipulation, lies, deception, and anything else we do to get who we claim is our man.  The Bible clearly defines sin as anything that is not of faith, so if you find yourself calculating the man’s every move and figuring out ways to throw yourself in his path, then you are definitely not trusting in the true and living God.  You are trusting in your own selfish devices.  Now you tell me, if by chance you do catch the man, how can a relationship birthed in sin live and thrive?

The great news is what the next two verses in James have to say…”Do not err, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”  In other words, do not mistake God.  He has the good and perfect gift that you need.  He’s not like that man who can’t make up his mind about you–fickle and indecisive.  He is constant, steady, and unchanging.

Take your power and your dignity back, let the Lord have His way and give Him the reigns of your heart.

I’m not judgin’.  I’m just sayin’.
